How to make a Pet Blanket DIY

Hi My Name is Micaela and along with two other girl scout sisters Marielle and Aliyah we will be showing you how to create a No Sew Blanket.  We are very passionate about helping others in our community. Other thing we are also passionate about are animals. As we brainstormed and discussed what project we wanted to create to fulfill our Girl Scout Silver Award project. We all agreed on creating pet blankets for our local pet shelter and donating them. We are a team of three girl scouts and we decided to make 20 each. Each blanket takes about 2 hours in total to create.
The first thing you want to do is set your budget what funds will you be using. We decided to use our Birthday and Christmas money that we received from our loved ones.

SUPPLIES NEEDED
Fleece fabric
Scissors
Cutting Mat
Rotary blade was helpful but you can use the scissors as well
Measuring tape

Start researching your local fabric shops for fabric we are using Joann's Blizzard Fleece fabric and we used some Anti Pill Plush fleece fabric.

We are using a cute, print fabric for the front and a matching solid color for the back part of the blanket

The next thing you want to do is call the pet center you are donating to and ask if they require a specific size of pet blankets. Our center says to vary the size it did not matter. We decided to make several sizes. here are the different measurements we used:
30X30
36X36
40X40
After you have decided what size you will be creating you will then cut your fabric if you are creating print and solid as we did you will cut one print and one solid fabric. Having a total of 2 cut fabric pieces to create the blanket.

After you have your two pieces cut out you will then cut the four corners using a piece of paper such as a post it as a guide. If your blanket is smaller than 30X30 consider making the post it a little smaller.

After you have cut the four corners you will then begin to cut the strips that will tie both blankets together. Oh and have we mentioned this a NO SEW BLANKET how EXCITING!!
What helped us have perfect strips was use a piece of painters tape going from one end to the other and having a long ruler or measuring tape in front just to get the right 1 inch cuts.

After the strips have been cut you then begin to tie. We saw several videos where it shows that you can make a slit on the strip right above and that made it a lot easier for me to tie. Or you can simply begin to tie the top strip to the bottom strip.
(Cut a slit)

Holding on to both pieces of fabric from the bottom of the strip you will bring it up and insert in the slit you have made pull through and that creates your knot.

After you have tied up all the strips your blanket is done! Congratulations you have created a No Sew Blanket YOU ARE AMAZING. Now go ahead and make more to donate to an animal shelter or if you decide to make these for folks that may need them you ARE SO COOL!
REMEMBER to take pictures of your creations and write down how much time and money was spent in your projects all of the logistics matter.

DROPPING OFF OUR BLANKETS!!!

We went in a week after to drop off another set of blankets and we found a cute kitten benefitting from a blanket that we made this is AMAZING TO SEE!

  1. This is wonderful! Did you find it easy to cut all the strips? My doggie needs a new bed. Do you think I can put some fluff in one to make him a bed? He would love the softness of the fleece! Thank you and great job!

    1. Hi this is Micaela, Yes once I began to cut the first strips on the blanket it became easy to continue cutting the rest. I think fluff sounds great but it might come through the knotted areas, maybe add another layer of fleece instead of 2 layers make it like a sandwich and the inside could be the extra cushion. I hope this helped. Thank you for your questions.
